Orienteering 2005 at the Slovenian Farm. (more info)
Background - What is orienteering?
Orienteering is a competitive sport combining map-reading and cross-country running, where the participants compete to be first to cross an unknown area with the aid of a topographical map and a compass.
Everyone can participate to their own ability, competitively running, or leisurely walking. Using a detailed map the participant has to find checkpoints (or controls) in the terrain. The location of the checkpoints is marked on the map. In the terrain the controls are marked with an orange and white control flag. The participant that visits all the controls in the right order in the fastest time is the winner of the race.
Orienteering is an international sport with activities on six continents. Canada and Slovenia are both members of the International Orienteering Federation. There is an annual World Championship. In Ontario there are Orienteering Clubs in Toronto, Hamilton, Guelph, London, Ottawa and other cities.
Orienteering is a sport for everyone, young and old, men and women, competitive runner and leisurely walker. Orienteering events have different categories so everyone can participate, depending on navigation skills and fitness level.
